    Canada makes a large investment in its education system. In fact, Canada is one of the world’s top education performers and among the top three countries in spending per capita on public post-secondary education, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

    How it works

    The post-secondary education system in Canada is divided into:
    • Certificate level, generally for a year.
    • Diploma level, for one or two years.
    • Advanced diploma, generally two or three-year programs.
    • Bachelor degrees, awarded after four years of full-time study.
    • Postgraduate diplomas/certificates, for one or two years of study.
    • Master’s degrees, available after a bachelor degree to excel in a certain subject, for one to two years.
    • Doctorate or PhD, generally four to seven years.

    Academic Year

    Most colleges and universities typically offer classes from early September until the end of April or early May. The winter session is usually divided into two terms that operate from September to December and then from January to April. There are several different kinds of summer studies offered between May and August. There are also a few select schools in Canada that offer year- round schooling.

    Depending on the university, undergraduate degrees can take either three or four years to complete. Depending on the type of degree, postgraduate degrees take between one and two years to complete. Master’s programs generally take between one to two years and PhD programs are longer than in other countries. They usually take between four and seven years to complete.
    As well as Canadian universities being devoted to research and high-quality teaching, they also aim to provide opportunities that improve students’ learning, career and life. Classes at university are a combination of lectures and tutorials. Lectures are taught by professors and can contain anywhere between 30 to 200 students.     Fees and scholarships

    Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan

    This program is designed to enable students to pursue programs of advanced study and research at the master and PhD level in Commonwealth countries other than their own. The award comprises travel, living allowance and all compulsory tuition fees.
    Offers several fellowships at various levels from graduate to postdoctorate and from research to training fellowships.
    Research associateships are offered to master degree holders in engineering and PhD holders in natural science or engineering disciplines.
    For graduate students in a wide variety of disciplines. Students must accept an offer from a university in Ontario and obtain a valid student permit (visa).
    Supports both basic university research through research grants and project research via partnerships of universities and industry.
    For students studying in Quebec. Financial assistance is available to students studying master’s level or above. Each application is assessed on its own merit.
    First announced in November 2010 for the best doctoral students from around the world to study in Ontario. Each scholarship is worth $40,000 annually, renewable for a maximum of four years. 75 scholarships are awarded each year. Ontario universities are responsible for selecting and awarding scholarships to international PhD students based on merit and program.

    The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is an expedited study permit processing program for those who are applying to study in Canada at a post-secondary designated learning institution (DLI). The SDS is available to legal residents who also reside in

    To be eligible, applicants must meet specific requirements by providing documentation up front.

    Eligibility criteria

    The applicant must include the following documents to be eligible for SDS processing:
    • Proof of a valid language test result, completed within 2 years of the date the SDS application was received, showing either of the following:
    • An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0 or higher in each language skill: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
    • A Test d’Evaluation de Français (TEF) score that is equivalent to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of at least 7 for each ability: at least 310 for speaking, 249 for listening, 207 for reading and 310 for writing.
    • Proof of a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAN$10,000 or more from any bank insured by the Canadian Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) or any bank listed on the IRCC SDS web page
      The GIC must meet the following criteria:
    • When the GIC has been purchased, the bank provides a letter of attestation, the GIC certificate, the Investment Directions Confirmation or the Investment Balance Confirmation to the applicant.
    • The bank holds the funds in an investment account or a student account that is inaccessible for release to the applicant until the applicant’s arrival in Canada.
    • Upon entry to Canada, the bank must validate the client’s identity before releasing funds to the study permit holder.
    • The applicant receives an initial disbursement upon identifying themselves, and the remaining funds are disbursed in monthly or bimonthly installments over a period of 10 to 12 months.
    • Proof of full payment of tuition for the applicant’s first year of study
      This may be in the form of the following:
    • A receipt from the DLI
    • An official letter from the DLI confirming payment of tuition fees
    • A receipt from a bank showing that tuition fees have been paid to the DLI
    • Proof that the tuition fee amount has been transferred into a repository account at the DLI to be applied to the tuition bill at a later date
    • Letter of acceptance from a post-secondary DLI
    • Most recent secondary or post-secondary educational transcripts
    • Proof of completion of upfront medical examination from a panel physician for applicants
    • Who have lived or travelled for 6 months in designated countries or territories during the year before coming to Canada
    • Whose field of study requires upfront medical examination results

    Non SDS visa requirements 2022-2023

    Following are the requirements for documents under the Non SDS visa 2021. The study abroad aspirants should necessarily include following documents in their Non SDS visa 2021 application:
    • Letter of Acceptance from DLI institution.
    • Medical exam confirmation document copy
    • GIC of $10,000 proof
    • Proof of paid tuition fee
    • Financial Documents (For ensuring future tuition fee plan)
    • Proof of IELTS test score
